I am Bruce Hiscock and the books I write and illustrate are about nature. As a kid in Michigan, I spent a lot of time outdoors,
and a lot of time drawing too. I still spend a lot of time outside, but now I write about the things I see. The books cover
a wide range of subjects: rocks, trees, animals, birds, just about anything out there including the endlessly beautiful clouds and
sky. Some of them like The Big Rock and The Big Tree are based on things close to my home, here in the Adirondack Mountains of
New York State. In other books, such as Ookpik- The Travels of a Snowy Owl, you can journey with me with me to the arctic
tundra, as I go off adventuring with sketch book and camera in hand.
Something New-
Several of my books, like an all-time favorite, The Big Tree, have gone out of print after many years of publication.
I am now making that book available again through The Porter Corners Press in a print-on-demand (POD) mode.
Most of my books are
published by Simon and Schuster or Boyds Mills Press and printed in Hong Kong where only large print runs are possible. I am
grateful for that, but happy that I can also keep books in print with small press runs right here, close to home.
I walk in the woods almost everyday and some of the things I see are reported in the What's New in the Woods page, along with occasional
reports from my travels around the Earth.
I have been working on a How-to-Draw book for sometime, and finally have begun searching
for a publisher. To see previews of this work, check out the How-to-Draw page by clicking on the banner above.
If you would like
to write me, and I hope you will, click on Contact, and a blank email will appear.
Whether you live in a city or in the woods,
take some time to get outside and see what nature has to offer. There are always surprises out there!
Have fun,
What else is Bruce up to?
